California heads will get the chance to watch the highly anticipated Zoo York film “State of Mind” on June 18th. The film showcases the Zoo York’s Skate team – Eli Reed, Chaz Ortiz, Forrest Kirby and more. The film will be premiering at La Paloma Theater. Derrick Cabrera (Paul Rodriguez), like all skateboarders, dreams of being sponsored one day. He has all the talent in the world to make it happen but some major roadblocks to overcome before he can make the dream a reality. He is receiving pressure from all sides, his parents are stressing him because he is failing in school, his girlfriend thinks he is a loser, his best friend has become his rival because he is better than him. Things come to a head after Derrick gets arrested and a fight ensues with his father resulting in him running away from home. He does the only thing he knows how to do and opts to follow his dream to the Tampa Am contest, one of the only ways an unknown skater can get noticed. Check out the trailer after the jump.
So by now $158 million worth of you have seen The Dark Knight, which means you also saw the first trailer for Watchmen. I’m not going to mince words – this is the most important superhero story that’s ever been told, and for me personally it’s also the most important film adaptation outside The Lord of the Rings. Many comics fans, myself included, consider this the pinnacle of the medium, with a subversive plot that I still consider too dense for a feature length movie. But it’s happening, and you can bet that one way or the other, Watchmen is going to have people talking. Check out some stills and the trailer after the jump.
Alright so long before Lost or Battlestar Galactica, The X-Files was the sci-fi show that you could admit to watching and still be able to make friends. Now if you’re anything like me, as rad as the ongoing conspiracy was, later seasons got way too bogged down with the confusing details and the infrequency with which that plot developed. No, the real strength of this show were the affectionately named Monster of the Week episodes. So after the series wrapped up and an initial theatrical release closed the book on the overarching plot, it seems only fitting to give those weekly monsters their shot at the big screen.
Alright, so I didn’t have time yesterday to yell from the highest peaks of the internet about Iron Man, but let me tell you – this is easily among the best superhero movies I’ve seen. There’s been some great adaptations of comics characters over the past few years, but Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man is flawless. I mean, how hard could his portrayal of rich, alcoholic international celebrity Tony Stark really have been? But seriously, as a comics nerd or a casual fan, you’ll walk away wishing for a sequel on this one.
