Crooks and Castles linked up with photographer Chi Modu to showcase some of his great photography. Chi Modu, who is best known for capturing the beginnings of the hip-hop movement as well as being the photographer behind several ads for big companies such as Sony and Paramount. As the opening reception was this past Thursday, it’s not too late to check out some of Modu’s great work. The exhibition is due to run from September 10th through to October 10th at the Crooks Sunset ‘Con.cept’ Shop.

Vice, the international arts and culture magazine distributed and published in more than 22 countries, comes to Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery on July 25 for the ninth annual Vice Photo Show.

Best known for documenting youthful excess, questionable street fashion and powerful scenes of political unrest around the world, Vice enlisted curator and magazine contributor Amy Kellner to present this exhibition in conjunction with “The 2009 Vice Magazine Photo Issue.” The acclaimed annual edition has previously featured works from Terry Richardson, Ryan McGinley, Richard Kern, Jerry Hsu and many others. Greedy Genius and Japanese Photographer Yone have collaborated on a pair of these Cool Breeze’s. As you can see the sneaker features graphic prints of Yone’s photography which brings a innovative drive to execute the look of the shoe. Former club bouncer and Los Angeles native Estevan Oriol got his start in the entertainment business managing tours for huge artists like “House of Pain” and “Cypress Hill” almost 20 years ago. While globe trotting with them he began his photography career taking flicks of the madness and glitter that surrounds international celebrities. When he was back home in L.A though, it was a much different story. He took his cues from the street life surrounding him. The singular dramatic black and white photos he produces are gripping, beautiful, and authentically menacing portraits of individuals fully immersed in L.A gang lifestyle. Blessed with a talented eye and a hood pass, he takes pictures in places armed with a camera where most tough guys would take a weapon. Offered for the first time to the public for free, in this exclusive interview from The Run Up, Estevan Oriol expresses his thoughts, methods, and views on approaching everyday with the hunger of a hustler who doesn’t know where his next meal will come from. This February Estevan Oriol brings his photographic retrospective to SURU entitled, “This is Los Angeles.” Along with limited edition photographic prints of some of his most recognizable works, a collaboration T-shirt will be released with SURU.
